TOWARD HOLIER COMMUNIONS: A SIMPLE SUGGESTION (Eng) – Rev. Thomas M. Kocik

A former Baptist seminary professor and convert to Catholicism once told me that the primary reason he became Catholic was the Church’s theology of the Eucharist, which he (as a New Testament scholar) found to be faithful to the biblical witness, once certain modern lenses fell like scales from his eyes. The Apostle Paul speaks of our real participation in the body and blood of Christ as that which unites the Church; soon thereafter he remarks that some of the Corinthians have fallen sick and died because they ate and drank “without discerning the body” (1 Corinthians 10:16-17; 11:27-32). One does not die from mishandling symbols, but from mishandling divine habitations. (Read the account in 2 Samuel 6 of Uzzah’s demise before the Ark of the Covenant.)
